What is a qualified motor vehicle?
• Having two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or • Having three or more axles regardless of weight; or • Is used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight. Qualified motor vehicle does not include recreational vehicles. Farm plated vehicles and school buses meeting the definition of “qualified motor vehicle” will need to obtain an IFTA license and fuel decals if they are traveling in another jurisdiction where they are required. A Qualified Motor Vehicle is a motor vehicle used, designed, or maintained for transportation of people or property and: has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms; or has three or more axles regardless of weight; or is used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds or 11,797 kilograms gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight.
A qualified motor vehicle includes a motor vehicle that is used to transport persons or property, and: • has two axles and a registered gross vehicle weight or more than 11,797 kg (26,000 pounds); or • has three or more axles on the power unit regardless of weight; or • has a total registered gross vehicle weight of more than 11797 kg when used in combination. Recreational vehicles, irrespective of weight or axle configuration, when not used in connection with a business endeavor are not considered qualified motor vehicles. Recreational vehicles include motor homes, pickup trucks with attached campers, and buses when used exclusively for personal pleasure by an individual.
A qualified motor vehicle is one used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property and meeting one of the following size and weight requirements: • two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 11,797 kilograms (26,000 lbs.); • three or more axles regardless of weight; or • if used in combination with a trailer, a combined weight that exceeds 11,797 kilograms (26,000 lbs.). A recreational vehicle is not a qualified motor vehicle. Special rules apply for farm-plated vehicles registered under IFTA.
