What is a Provost?
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cal Poly is the chief academic officer and senior vice president of the University, and is responsible to the President for the formulation and implementation of academic plans, policies, and priorities, and for the allocation of resources to carry these matters forward. Each of Cal Poly’s seven academic college deans report to the Provost, as do the Deans of the University Library, Research and Graduate Programs, and Cal Poly Continuing Education. In addition, the Provost has a number of offices that report to him including Academic Programs and Undergraduate Education, Information Technology Services, Institutional Planning and Analysis, Academic Personnel, Enrollment Support Services, University Scheduling and Intercollegiate Athletics. A provost is a senior official in a university or college. This term for senior officials is generally only used in the academic community, with the provost being equivalent to the chief executive officer of the university. His or her job is to supervise academic matters on behalf of the governing organization of the institution, usually with the assistance of a large support staff which helps the provost accomplish a variety of tasks, from hiring new faculty to dealing with suspected cases of academic fraud or cheating. The term “provost” comes from a Latin term meaning “chief” or “in charge of,” and it appears to have been used originally in the Church to refer to high ranking appointed officials, later being adopted by the academic community. Provosts are appointed by the board of governors, President, or other governing officials of the college, and they are responsible to these individuals in addition to the chief financial officer of the college. The Provost is responsible for overseeing the overall academic integrity of the entire institution. In consultation with faculty, officers and Trustees, the Provost is responsible for all strategic plans and initiatives, particularly those that transcend a single faculty, and for coordinating institutional academic, financial and facilities planning. Working with the academic deans, the Provost also is responsible for supporting and advancing the programs, the teaching, and the scholarship of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Tuck School of Business, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Dartmouth Medical School. The appropriate Deans have full operating responsibility in each case. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the senior academic officer for the university campus. The Provost oversees all academic activities, including academic personnel, budgets, programs and priorities. She/he ensures the quality of the faculty and student body by providing leadership in matters related to academic programs and policies, promotion and tenure, faculty recognition, library, university outreach, student retention, academic support services, the Honors College, Institutional Analysis Assessment and Reporting, Service Learning, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and International Programs Office. The deans and leaders of academic administrative units report to the Provost.
Beginning in 1962 with IU’s first Chancellor, the legendary Dr. Herman B Wells, Indiana University was led by both a Chancellor and a President. That changed in the spring of 2006 when the Board of Trustees announced major changes intended to enhance the university’s management structure, particularly at IU Bloomington, the flagship campus of IU’s eight-campus system. At that time, the trustees created the new position of Bloomington Provost. The Provost and Executive Vice President is the chief academic officer for the Bloomington campus. The Provost oversees academic and budgetary policy and priorities and ensures the quality of the faculty and student body by providing leadership in matters related to academic programs and policies, promotion and tenure, faculty recognition, research, university outreach, and student recruitment and retention.
