What is a pro bono project?
There are four main requirements for a law student project to qualify as pro bono. First, the student must engage in law-related activities. Second, the students work must be supervised or have been approved by an attorney. This requirement, at a minimum, requires attorney review of the student work product. Third, the services must provided to the client free of charge or at a substantially reduced rate (whether reduced rate work will qualify as pro bono depends on several factors, including the actual rate being charged the client, whether or not the attorney would bill for work performed by law students, the economic factors preventing the client from obtaining full-rate service, and the population affected by the legal issues involved).
