What is a primary care physician?
PCPs are providers who have contracted with Great-West Healthcare to be responsible for providing, arranging and coordinating all aspects of a Member’s care. Each family member may choose a different PCP. For help in selecting a PCP, contact Member Services. Complete the Application for Membership indicating a choice of PCP for each covered family member.
A primary care physician (PCP) is a doctor selected by the Member to be the first physician contacted for any medical problem. The PCP acts as the Member’s regular physician and coordinates any other care the Member needs, such as a visit to a specialist or hospitalization. Some plans do not require the selection of a primary care physician.
HMO, Open Access HMO, QPOS, USAccess, Elect Choice EPO, Open Access Elect Choice EPO, Managed Choice POS, Open Access Managed Choice POS: A Primary Care Physician (PCP) provides routine services, coordinates health care services, and provides referrals to specialists and for hospital services. PCPs can be family practitioners, general practitioners, internal medicine practitioners or pediatricians. Some states have legislation that mandates that other providers be permitted to participate as PCPs. Open Choice PPO, Traditional Choice: Primary Care Physicians (PCP) can be family practitioners, general practitioners, internal medicine practitioners or pediatricians. However, members are not required to select a primary care physician.
