What is a prenatal paternity test?
Prenatal paternity testing is a process through which you can determine paternity during pregnancy. For this DNA test, you will need to collect samples from yourself, the unborn baby, and the alleged father of the unborn baby. DNA samples from you and the alleged father can be collected through the painless buccal swabs, the collection of cells from the inside of your cheeks. DNA samples from the unborn baby can be collected in one of two ways, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Between the tenth and thirteenth weeks of your pregnancy, your OB/GYN can collect a DNA sample from your baby by performing a chorionic villi sampling (CVS). This procedure collects cells from the placenta to be analyzed. Between the fourteenth and twenty-fourth weeks of pregnancy, your OB/GYN can collect a DNA sample from your baby through an amniocentesis.
