What is a pre–assessment for dyslexia?
A pre-assessment is an initial investigation to establish the nature of difficulty that an individual may be experiencing. The pre-assessment usually involves an in-depth discussion, covering issues such as educational history and the functional effects of the difficulties. This is typically followed by the administration of some tests: these assessment tools are used to measure the nature of the difficulties a student may encounter. Following a pre-assessment, the student will be given feedback, including the results of the assessment. The results are confidential, they are not diagnostic and they do not measure intelligence (eg IQ). This feedback will recommend how to access the support most appropriate to an individual’s needs: this may involve referring a person for a full diagnostic assessment.
