What is a Pre-Tenancy Determination?
If you are thinking of moving to privately rented accommodation and would like to know the maximum rent used for housing benefit purposes before you accept the accommodation, then you can apply for a free rent valuation called a pre-tenancy determination. To obtain a pre-tenancy determination application form contact the Benefits and Council Tax Team or your local Council Office. This form must be completed by the prospective tenant and the landlord and returned to the Council. We will then send the form to the Rent officer. The Rent Officer may visit the property (if it has not been visited before) and then send a written decision to all parties concerned (normally within 5 working days). Pre-tenancy Determinations do not tell the prospective tenant the amount of Housing Benefit that will be paid.
