What is a pre-authorization or “pre-auth”?
Pre-authorization is the requirement of advanced approval to cover a purchase. For example, if you are purchasing gasoline at the pump, how much fuel you will purchase is often uncertain. The pumping system will reserve a certain amount of funds (usually $75.00) pending the reconciliation of the charge. The pre-authorization hold is usually released within 3-4 days.
