What is a Power Brick?

There was something listed on my new components list for the notebook computer I just bought. I dont see anything that it could be. Josh Dear Josh: Most people know a power brick as a power adapter, the cord that comes with the computer that plugs into the wall to both power the computer up and recharge the battery. The power brick is the rectangular box that is in the middle of that cord. Because plugging the AC cord directly into your computer (from the wall outlet) would blow your computers innards, the power brick converts the higher powered AC to DC which your laptop can handle. While power bricks come with your computer, you can purchase additional ones from the manufacturer of your computer or from any computer specialty store like Best Buy or Circuit City. I find this handy because I keep one at home and one at work thereby eliminating the need to lug it back and forth and saving me if I accidentally forget it at home when I need it at work. Its easiest to bring your laptop wit

When a computer user unpacks a notebook computer, one of the first components he will see is the power brick. This large, rectangular piece weighs a pound or two, but is essential to the machine’s operation. The power brick is part of the external power supply. It also provides the power for the computer to charge its batteries. Plugging straight AC from a wall outlet into a notebook would blow the circuits, so lower-voltage DC powers the notebook. The power brick accomplishes the conversion. The computer is plugged into the power brick, while a cord runs from the power brick into a standard AC plug. A power brick will usually have a light on it to alert the user that it is functioning properly. If a notebook computer will not recharge its batteries, then the power brick may be at fault. However, power bricks are manufactured by the computer companies themselves, and what runs one notebook may not power another. A user will have to look for a power brick that is designed for his partic

Also referred to as a transformer, an element of the external power supply for a notebook and/or laptop computer, used in conjunction with a battery pack. Since notebook computers rely on low-voltage DC, they need a way to convert the AC from a power source into DC that can be safely used by the computer. The power brick takes the AC voltage and converts it to a DC voltage slightly higher than the battery (the slight elevation in voltage ensures that the battery stays fully charged). Batteries normally supply the safe DC voltage to the portable computer, but power bricks are intended for use in conjunction with or instead of a mobile devices battery.
