What is a Post-Gastric Bypass Upper GI?
An Upper GI (Gastrointestinal) exam is done to view your new pouch under fluoroscopy (live x-ray). Exam time is approximately forty-five minutes but also dependent on your anatomy. Time will vary because your intestinal tract may be faster or slower than other individuals. Please expect to be in the Radiology Department for at least 45 minutes and up to 2 hours. You may want to bring headphones or a book. What should I expect? • You will be asked to stand on a large step-stool while two abdominal x-rays are taken. • You will then be seated while the x-rays are looked at by the Radiologist and/or Physician s assistant. • After film review, you will need to stand again and take small sips of Gastrografin (contrast). • While standing and drinking the contrast, digital images will be taken of your new pouch, its 1 cm opening and small bowel. • If contrast does not pass through the anastomosis we will ask you to be seated to wait for additional images to be taken.
