What is a portfolio?
Don’t confuse a portfolio with a resum. A resum lists your accomplishments at each organization (in reverse chronological order, please). But a portfolio shows the work you’ve done. A professional portfolio is a collection of your work accomplishments, using specific examples to show those accomplishments in much greater detail than a resum. When my children were in preschool, the teachers collected their artwork to show us their growth and achievement over time. Now that they’re in school, their grades are somehow supposed to replace the examples. But I found much more value in seeing their work evolve over the course of a year than just seeing grades on a report card. In the same way that parents can see children’s accomplishments change, prospective employers can see your accomplishments grow and change. How do I fill a portfolio? Creating a professional portfolio is a quite a bit more complicated than your teacher’s efforts in preschool. These steps should help you put one together
A portfolio is a structural collection of a person’s progress, achievements, contributions and efforts that demonstrates accomplishments over time. Portfolios vary by career field, experience, personal taste and scope. Your portfolio can be a simple companion page for your resume, a notebook or a folder full of original materials illustrating your abilities, or anything in between. Traditionally portfolios have been used in fields like art, education and writing. Portfolios are now a growing trend in many other career fields as well. There are no strict rules about what to include or how to structure your portfolio. The purpose and content of your portfolio will be determined by your career goal. If you are looking for a job in more than one career field you may need to vary the contents. Just remember that you have the freedom to create a portfolio that reflects you and your abilities.
A portfolio refers to a detailed expenditure that is broken into multiple expense types for proper classification. In EMS, a portfolio can be created in one of two ways. If an expense is accompanied by electronic Level III detail, EMS will automatically assign the correct expenditure type(s), creating portfolios as needed. Splitting a charge or classifying a portion of the charge under a different expenditure type will also result in the creation of a portfolio line on the report. Preparers and approvers should not use the “portfolio” option from the expense type list. The system will automatically create a portfolio when needed.
