There is no polite way of asking this question which is why 9 out of 10 people will reply with “none of your business”. If I were you I would avoid this but if you really must ask the only thing you can say is “If you don’t mind me asking blah blah blah”.

Generally there would be no polite way of asking such a question. However, in an interview I think it changes the situation. If this is something that has to be know it should have really been requested on the original application form for the position. I have often completed such application forms, together with forwarding my CV and usually the question “What is your present salary pa?” is asked. Therefore those interviewing already are aware and no need to ask outright at the interview. I personally consider a prospective employee’s salary irrelevant as the new employer must have already have decided within a certain range what they intend paying the person attaining the position. A better question would be to ask “What salary would you be be expecting from the position in question?”. I imagine most people would add a bit on but there is always room for negotiating. Don’t worry too much about it as I don’t think anyone would be gobsmacked at an interview even if you asked outright th
