What is a PNG File?
PNG is an extension that can usually be created and open by most paint programs, including Microsoft Paint which is the default program in Microsoft Windows or Preview on Mac’s OSX. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to improve upon and replace GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) as an image-file format not requiring a patent license. The PNG acronym is optionally recursive, unofficially standing for PNG’s Not GIF. PNG supports palette-based (palettes of 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA colors), greyscale, RGB, or RGBA images. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for print graphics, and so does not support color spaces (such as CMYK).
A PNG file is a file that is for layering onto a background or photo that has a transparent background. A PNG file may be resized larger or smaller and may be moved around on your page and placed onto any layer. These PNG files are usually used in scrapbooking for elements like ribbons, borders, buttons, alphabets and embellishments in general.
