What is a plimsoll line ships function?

Hi, Plimsoll line is generally for merchant ships, this is not required for war ships.Plimsoll line is a marking on the outer hull of a ship which shows avoiding furthur loading of commodities or what ever the ship may be carrying (like cars, containers oil and so on). This is considered as the safe line for loading of commodities. when objects are being loaded ships starts shrinking and when reached at this line loading is stopped. Care must be taken for different bodies of water like river water which density is lower as compared to sea water so ships floats to a lesser height when in river water.
