What is a Plane For Wood Work?
A Plane is one of the most common tools that a carpenter carries on them. Planes come in many different types and sizes, for various applications. You can purchase a tiny little block plane to carry around in the tool box, or use a plane that is over half a metre long for the workshop. Today, there are even electric planes for doing more serious work. We are always trying to save time, and by allowing the electricity to do the work you save a significant amount of time. A plane is basically run along the length of timber, and a blade takes off a shaving of timber. Planes can be designed for running against, with or across the grain. Most planes work best if you run with the grain though. You can adjust the blade up or down, and depending on how far down it sits passed the bed will give you different sized shavings. The blade is slightly angled, allowing you to get the best cut. An electric plane has one, two or three blades that spin around on a roller and take off a lot more timber. T
