What is a PIN?
Your PIN is initially set to be your 6-digit birthdate (MMDDYY) until you change it to another 6-digit PIN. Students who were admitted to USU prior to Winter 1998 may still have a 4-digit PIN number (MMDD) plus 2 zeros. You are encouraged to change your PIN to another number as soon as possible to enhance security on your personal records. For more information on your PIN, see the ACCESS FAQs.
The Personal Identification Number (PIN) is an identifier and security device that allows you access to your personal information on various U.S. Department of Education systems. A PIN works in the same way as a bank personal identification number that enables you to access your checking or savings account and ensures the privacy of your information. Because your PIN serves as your electronic signature, you should not give it to anyone. Please visit the U. S. Department of Education’s Web site to apply for PIN. Once you successfully complete a request, the Department of Education will e-mail or mail your PIN. Within approximately 1-3 business days you will receive an e-mail notice with instructions on how to retrieve it electronically. Notification via U. S. Postal Service takes 7-10 days. When you use your PIN, you must type the PIN exactly as it appears. If you have lost or forgotten your PIN, request a duplicate PIN be sent to you.
