What is a Pentecostal religions believe of Gifts from the Holy Spirit?
Barb, Praise the Lord for your salvation, and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit! There are several denominations that teach and preach the salvation by grace through faith, the baptism of the holy Spirit, and the gifts and operation of the Holy Spirit. I would recommend finding a church that isn’t affiliated with a bunch of others. In other words, find one that is independent of all other churches. That way, you will not be burdened with a bunch of system rules that aren’t in the Bible. As for pentecostalism, the use of the gifts are to be limited in the church in regards to tongues. Tongues are only allowed if there is an interpreter present, and even then only three at most. Read 1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 14 for more information, because they address exactly what you’re looking for an answer about. Also feel free to email me for more information if you like. I’m a Pastor.
I go to a pentecostal church, but I am not pentecostal. I do, however, work overnights with a woman who is pentecostal and we actually got into a discussion regarding tongues a couple nights ago. I believe that the gift of tongues is used as a sign to an unbeliever to show that a given prophecy did not originate from man, but from God. That is all I think it is useful for, and all God has ever used it for. (1 Corinthians 12-15, where it discusses all the gifts of the Spirit, and the Acts accounts) She, on the other hand, said that while that is one way to interpret the sciptures, her sect believes that there is another type of speaking in tongues, which is a sign of a baptism of the holy spirit, and is not actually a ‘gift of the spirit’ in the same definition as the other gifts described. She said that it is a seperate prayer language used through us by the Holy Spirit to communicate with God when we don’t know how or what to pray, such as is said in Romans 8. I disagree with this, an
Pentecostals believe all of the gifts and manifestations of the Spirt will continue until the Lord returns and we are perfected. There are 2 kinds of tongues, which is what confuses some folks. There is a minesterial gift, used to address the congregation. God is speaking through that person a message for the congregation to hear. Someone will interpret that message with the gift of interpretation. Then there is the “prayer language” that you get when you are baptised with the Spirit. That is your spirit speaking directly to God, not to other people. You don’t understand what you are saying when you speak in tongues. When you speak in tongues it is your spirit praying with help from the Holy Spirit. You are not using your mind at all. Your mind can be elsewhere, but in a time of prayer I focus my mind on things of God. When you read acts chapter 2 you see that Peter said the promise of having the Holy Ghost poured out on you ( Act 2:39) is “unto you, and to your children, and to all th
