What is a pelvic examination? How is it performed?
When the changes in your menstrual cycle or vaginal discharge start bothering you, you should get a pelvic examination done by your doctor. Before the examination, you will be asked to remove your clothes and undergarments. You may also be asked to urinate before the examination is done. A blanket will be placed over your upper body while your lower body will be exposed for the examination. Then you will be asked to lie on your back. Your legs will be raised up and supported by stirrups. During the examination, the doctor may insert a gloved finger or metal instrument called a speculum into the vaginal canal to obtain samples from the cervix or to directly view the structures.
