What is a peak expiratory flow (PEF)?

A “peak flow” is a breathing test that measures how quickly you can blow air out of your lungs. When airways are narrowed due to asthma, air moves slowly and the peak flow test is reduced. Peak flow tests can tell you how your asthma is doing, and can let you know when an asthma flare may be developing, even before the flare causes symptoms.
