What is a PDF file?
“Adobe PDF is a universal file format that preserves all of the fonts, formatting, colors, and graphics of any source document, regardless of the application and platform used to create it. PDF files are compact and can be shared, viewed, navigated, and printed exactly as intended by anyone with a free Adobe Acrobat Reader(TM).” (Taken from Adobe’s Web site) ICPSR has recently moved toward providing all of its documentation files in Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF is a cross-platform format for publishing documents which preserves the work’s original design and layout, including fonts and graphics. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Additional information on PDF and the free viewing software can be found at Adobe’s Web site.
The PDF file (Portable Document Format) is a file format created by Adobe in order to allow different computers, with different settings, to view the same documents without any formating errors. In other words, what you see on your computer screen should be the same as what I see on my computer screen; and what your neighbour sees, and your friends and your boss etc. The best way to view a PDF document is to download Acrobat Reader. It’s free and it will work on any computer.
From Adobe.com: Invented by Adobe Systems and perfected over 15 years, Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) lets you capture and view robust information — from any application, on any computer system — and share it with anyone around the world. To view PDF files, you must have Adobe Reader on your computer. You can download it here.
A Portable Document File (PDF) is a program that has been licensed by Acrobat Company. The program allows the user to have a software version of a printed file, either in text or image or both combined. The well known Acrobat Reader alone will not allow the user to create or edit a PDF document. Hence, all you have to do is to download the right software that will allow you to create and edit a text document into a PDF or combine some text and graphics into a PDF format.
