All GPS vehicle tracking systems catch satellite signals and use the data to calculate the location of the device. There are two basic types of GPS tracking devices: active and passive. Active systems let you know where a vehicle is in real time. Passive GPS tracking systems tell you where it was. The location information is the same. The distinction is whether you must have the information immediately, or if you choose to analyze it later. There is also a difference in ease of operation and price.
