The Democratic and Republican parties can choose their candidates for the November general elections by either a primary or a party meeting, sometimes also called a canvass or caucus. If the party chooses a primary, it will be held on the second Tuesday in June. In Presidential Election years, party primaries for the office of President may be held on the second Tuesday in February.
