What is a Partnership Wild & Scenic River?
Wild & Scenic Rivers is a federal classification identifying rivers that have special attributes that are worth protectinganything from unique fish and wildlife habitat to distinctive geological formations, from cultural/historical significance to robust recreational opportunities. Many Wild & Scenic Rivers are in the West and flow through large blocks of federally-managed land. In the Northeast, however a new modelPartnership Wild & Scenic Rivershas gradually evolved. Shaped to respond to the needs of a more varied pattern of land ownership, Partnership Wild & Scenic Rivers are located primarily on private lands and are not owned or managed by the government. The strategy for protecting and managing Partnership Wild & Scenic Rivers involves broad collaboration and consultation between state, local, and private groups that work in partnership to care for the river. There are currently eight designated Partnership National Wild & Scenic Rivers, most of which are located in the Northeast
