If the U.S. Military was going to commit to a land offensive and takeover of Japan, the casualties would be severe. Keeping in mind that thousands of Japanese soldiers would fight and charge to the death on some rock that had little relevance to them or anyone else (see Iwo Jima) it was uncomprehending of how Japanese soldiers would fight on land they grew up on and own. The bombings inflicted 140 000 dead approximately and many thousands were suffering from radiation sickness immediately after. The leader of Japan, Emperor Tojo had the power to prevent not one but two of these bombings as President Truman had requested their surrender before each bombing, I’m not entirely sure but I believe Truman’s next target for atomic bombing would’ve been Tokyo which would’ve killed more people than Hiroshima and Nagasaki put together.
