What is a noun phrase and when do you use them ?
As you probably know, a noun is a word for a “thing”, such as dog, apple, table, etc. A “noun phrase” is basically a noun given by more than one word, where the extra words don’t do anything extra, e.g. are not verbs, adjectives, etc. Pretty much any noun with the word “the” placed in front of it could be called a noun phrase, and you use it to divide sentences up into fewer chunks when you are analysing them. For example, the sentence “the book is on the table” could be split up as: article, noun, verb, preposition, article, noun. However, it might be clearer to view “the book” as a noun phrase and “on the table” as a preposition phrase. A slightly different example of a noun phrase is something like “the properties of sodium”- hopefully you can see how this phrase can be used as a noun. I don’t really understand what you’re asking about people listening, so I’m afraid I can’t help with that! I hope what I’ve written makes sense though.
