What is a network bridge, and why shouldn I create one?
A network bridge allows two or more networks (wired or wireless) to be tied together in such a way that they act like a single network. At Indiana University Bloomington, this causes problems, not only for the individual running the bridge, but also for the other wireless network users surrounding the bridging machine. The bridging computer will misroute other network traffic through its own network connection. This misdirection slows down not only the bridging computer’s network connection, but also network access on those computers close enough to view the bridging machine as a wireless access point. Traffic is disrupted on the IUB wired network as well. While you are at IUB, do not set up a bridged connection on either your laptop or desktop. If you do, a university representative will likely contact you to facilitate shutting down the bridged connection.
