What is a NetID?

0

Duke University and Duke University Health System are committed to providing each student and employee with secure access to systems and services on the Duke computing network via a NetID. All faculty, staff and students have been assigned individual NetIDs. The use of NetIDs is an important aspect of a Duke initiative to eliminate the unnecessary use of personal information such as social security numbers in identifying users and providing secure access to online systems and services via the Duke computing network. Without a NetID, your access to computing resources on campus is limited, and you cannot access many resources from off campus.

This document explains what a NetID is and how it is used. A NetID is your username and password combination which allows access to University services, such as email, MyUW, calendaring, student records, payroll information, etc. The NetID username is not case sensitive when used as a login credential. Your NetID username is randomly generated from University records and typically includes some combination of your first, middle, and last name. Your NetID username is not the same as your campus ID number. Your NetID will remain active for the entirety of your time at the University. Students, faculty, or staff who leave the university will have their NetID’s deactivated.

A Network ID (or NetID) is a personal, unique identifier assigned to you. It consists of your initials followed by one or more numbers. You use it, along with a password, to obtain access to online services, such as email and administrative systems. A password is required with your NetID to ensure that no one but you can access your confidential Cornell information. Your NetID and password also give you access to services that are exclusive to the Cornell community.

A NetID, or network ID, is a personal identifier assigned to SU students, staff and faculty to allow them access to many SU computing resources. It typically consists of a combination of initials and last name, and may include a number. The NetID owner creates the password, based on stringent rules designed to prevent hackers from guessing it and using it. Those who break into your account may access your personal data or make it look like problems they cause originate from you account.

NetIDs are personal, unique student logins at Stern. They provide you with access to protected Stern Websites (e.g., Course Faculty Evaluations, Student Directory). Your NetID is also your Stern email address (see below). Our Information Technology department creates NetIDs.
