What is a needle drop?
This refers to the use of a single portion, or “cue,” of an existing recording (placing the needle down on the recording and then lifting it), in synchronization with filmed or taped images. If a needle drop or “cue” from a produced recording has been used, one must deal with all of the normal clearance requirements with respect to the recording. Today many clients are now choosing a less expensive “pay as you play” option, wherein they only pay for music when and as it is used. This licensing option was originally known as “needle drop” – referring to the act of lowering a phonograph needle on to a record to place the music in a production. Today, it is more commonly known as “laser drop” – referring to the play of compact discs instead of vinyl records. Needle Drop music licensing (also known as Laser Drop Licensing) is one of the licensing options offered by the Filmtvtracks Library.
