What is a Naturopathic Physician?
Naturopathic physicians are licensed primary care physicians who specialize in natural medicine. We treat disease and restore health by using clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling. Treatments are customized to your specific needs. Naturopathic physicians do everything medical doctors do, except that we don’t prescribe most drugs, and don’t do most surgeries. We focus on prevention of future health problems in addition to treatment of current conditions. We work with you as a team to create a treatment plan that is both effective and “do-able”. Education is a cornerstone of what we do. We take the time to sit with you and explain a disease process or educate you about self-care in relation to your overall health.
Naturopathic physicians (N.D.’s) are general practitioners trained as specialists in natural medicine. They are educated in the conventional medical sciences, laboratory diagnostics, and holistic treatments. A naturopathic physician has a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.D.) degree from a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical university. In practice, naturopathic physicians perform physical examinations, laboratory testing, gynecological exams, nutritional and dietary assessments, X-ray and other diagnostic and screening tests. Naturopathic physicians treat using therapies from the sciences of clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, physical medicine, exercise medicine, and counseling. Naturopathic physicians may prescribe some medications in the event that is considered clinically necessary.

A licensed Naturopathic Physician (ND) has attended a four-year graduate level Naturopathic Medical school and is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD. However, the Naturopathic Physicians degree also requires training in clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology and counseling (to encourage people to make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health).
