What is a narrative anyway?
As a reporter, I really don’t know. I’m guessing that most reporters always try to write with voice (one of those narrative characteristics) and lots of detail. The narrative forces you to find a theme or a thread of the day and weave it through the entire story (which is something a lot of reporters already try to do). The narrative forces you to consider every single possibility and angle as the beginning of the story (like most stories). The narrative allows you to use more source-to-source dialogue (like most stories … you hope). For me, a narrative is a narrative when everyone else says it’s a narrative. For me the reporter, I’m just trying to write the best story for the readers. To be honest, Chip, I’m not smart enough to figure anything else out.
