What is a mitral valve repair/replacement?
This procedure is performed to treat severe cases of mitral valve prolapse, heart valve stenosis, or other valvular diseases. During the procedure, the mitral valve is repaired or replaced through a chest incision. The preferred method involves a small incision under your left breast rather than the traditional incision down the front of the chest. This smaller incision allows for quicker healing time and a shorter length of stay in the operating room. The prosthetic valve used for the procedure may be either mechanical or biological. Mechanical valves are constructed out of metals, polymers, and other materials. Biological valves consist of donated human tissue or animal tissue.
