What is a metaphor and simile?
No, describing something nonhuman with human-like characteristics is personification. A metaphor is comparing or equating two unlike things *without* using “like” or “as.” There are several types of metaphors, but I found that I worked the most with extended metaphors in high school. Extended metaphors are exactly what they sound like: a comparison between two unlike things for an extended period of time, such as the length of a poem or paragraph. Shakespeare is fantastic with extended metaphors if you want to look him up. A simile is a subcategory of metaphors. It does use “like” or “as” to compare the two unlike items.
