Credit card charges are processed in several steps. When a user enters his/her credit card information, we use a “gateway” to send the transactions to a “clearinghouse.” Think of a gateway as the electronic version of those card swiping machines. The clearinghouse is a company that checks to see that the credit card is valid and has enough credit for the purchase.
