Good question! Very good question! It’s a musical instrument. Resembling a keyboard it has black keys as well as white keys. It has a very moody sound and no technical service at all. (And if it were a car you would have to shift gears at least every 7 seconds. Else the engine would just stop.) To be honest, I’m not very keen on Mellotrons, but Mattias Olsson is. And there is a whole section on http://www.roth-handle.nu dedicated to his collection of instruments, where you can find a detailed Mellotron-section.
