A medically underserved community is a community in which a majority of the population is either uninsured or underinsured without access or very limited access to quality health care in terms of the number of health professionals or the number of sites providing quality health care to the population. A medically underserved population may also lack access to quality health care due to its location; isolated, rural and inner-city community members often lack access due to barriers such as lack of public transportation, travel time, distance to a health site or poverty.
