A CMA is expected to be proficient in certain clerical and clinical duties and is certified by passing the national board exam. In accordance with the American Association of Medical Assistants’ most recent role delineation study, the CMA is expected to be competent in the following categories: Transdisciplinary a CMA must be competent in professional behavior, communication skills, legal concepts, taking and giving instruction, and business operational functions. Medical Terminology CMAs must understand all medical terms used for diagnosis, assessment, and prescription of treatments including medications. Administrative CMAs must be competent in administrative procedures and practice finances, such as all aspects of billing.
