What is a Martingale Collar?
A martingale collar is basically a soft choke collar that tightens when a hound pulls which prevents hounds with long necks and small heads from backing out of the collar. Most greyhound adoption groups require all greyhounds to wear only martingale collars for the safety of the hound but they are also perfect for many other breeds.
Martingale collars are fitted to the exact size of the dog’s neck when the dog collar is pulled closed. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when not in use. When the Martingale control loop is pulled, the 2 slides (hardware on the small control loop of the Martingale collar) should pull close together but the two slides SHOULD NEVER TOUCH. As with any collar that tightens when pulled, it is not recommend that you allow your dog to wear a Martingale dog collar unsupervised. • Prevents dogs from easily slipping out of their collar by gently tightening so that it is unable to slip over the ears. • Does not damage the fur and will not crush the trachea.
Martingale Collars are also regularly referred to as Humane Choke collars. This type collar is designed to tighten but not strangle your hound. It is not a indefinite choke but is only intended to keep you dog safely in his/her collar. If correctly adjusted it will only tighten enough to prevent you hound from backing out of his/her collar. Sighthounds typically wear this style of collar because their heads are smaller that their necks but All Breeds of dogs can wear these collars. We have many non Sighthound customers who prefer the Martingale collar style. Many dog owners prefer this collar type because it does not damage the fur and will not crush the trachea.
