What is a Maritime Academy?
A maritime academy is a technical school, focused on teaching practical skills which can be put to use on the ocean or in industries related to the ocean. In addition to training sailors, a maritime academy also offers classes in maritime law, international business, engineering, technology, and many other fields directly related to careers on the high seas. Graduates of a maritime academy are prepared for careers in shipping, the merchant marine, or another maritime industry of choice. People have taken advantage of the training offered at maritime academies for hundreds of years. Early maritime academies offered training in seamanship including navigation, officer’s training, handling of ships, and how to conduct yourself while on board a vessel.
