What is a Mans Man?
A man’s man is a real man. He is courageous. He has integrity. But most of all, a man’s man knows how to get the job done. He is dedicated. He is powerful. He is clever. A man’s man is someone to believe in. Everyone knows a man’s man when he or she sees one. A man’s man casts out a powerful aura; a man’s man doesn’t take no for an answer. In the days of yore, a man’s man could be found everywhere. Examples of such include, but are not limited to: black knights, archers, blacksmiths, war heroes, mobsters, dragon slayers, explorers, wizards, time travelers, doctors, grandfathers, sailors, and especially pirates. Nowadays, a man’s man is much more difficult to find. He is no longer saving damsels, shooting arrows, making swords, fighting battles, organizing crime, slaying dragons, exploring unknown lands, casting spells, traveling through time, bringing people back from the dead, telling great stories, sailing the seven seas, plundering, pillaging or hording. A man’s man is a man who engages in activities which are traditionally viewed as masculine, and who earns the respect of other men. You may also hear a man’s man described as “manly,” emphasizing his masculine personality. Such men tend to be domineering, confident, and bold, because these character traits are reinforced by traditional gender roles. Human society shifted radically in the 20th century, in no small part because of the efforts of the feminist community. A major breakdown of traditional gender, race, and cultural roles occurred, leaving some people with a sense of being adrift or unclear about their roles in life. As a result, the definition of manliness and what it meant to be a man began to change, and the concept of a “man’s man” acquired fresh connotations, distinguishing such men from their more feminine or gender-fluid counterparts.
