What is a mailing list?
A mailing list is simply a list of addresses to which the same information is being sent. If you were a magazine publisher, you would have a list of the mailing addresses of all the subscribers to the magazine. In the case of an electronic mailing list, we use a list of email addresses from people interested in hearing about or discussing a given topic. Two common types of email mailing lists are announcement lists and discussion lists. Announcement lists are are used so that one person or group can send announcements to a group of people, much like a magazine publisher’s mailing list is used to send out magazines. For example, a band may use a mailing list to let their fan base know about their upcoming concerts. A discussion list is used to allow a group of people to discuss topics amongst themselves, with everyone able to send mail to the list and have it distributed to everyone in the group. A mailing list is a list of people’s names and e-mail addresses that is used to send certain messages or announcements to many people at once. These people are expected to have a common interest that is served by the mailing list. Each list is managed by a “list owner” who sets policies as to who can join (subscribe to) the list, who can send messages (post) to the list, whether the messages are moderated, and the general theme of discussion for the list.
A mailing list is a collaboration of Email addresses. These Email addresses all share a common name. In this case, the common name is “240z-club@peak.org” This is our Email address. When a member sends Email to 240z-club@peak.org, that message is copied to every member on the list. For instance, if I was to post a message right now, that message would be sent to about 300+ other members. Each member would receive that message as if it were sent personally from my mailbox. The list is open, but, subscription requests must be approved by the list moderator. Members are the only people who can post to the list. Thus, we won’t be bothered by spam or sales advertisements. A mailing list is a closed group of people who receive information by e-mail on a particular topic – in this case, travel in Spain. Once subscribed, you send your questions to the list by e-mail attravelspain@googlegroups.com. Everybody on the list receives your message and has the opportunity to answer. You will receive all the messages everyone else sends to the list, whether they interest you or not. All messages will be received at the e-mail address you used to subscribe.
