The magnetic core memory used to be the main storage device before the discovery of silicon memory devices. It can be magnetized at incredible speeds that are billionth of a second and will retain this magnetism unless deliberate change is made. It is based on the principle that a current charring conductor produces a circular magnetic field it becomes a magnet. If the direction of the current is reversed then the direction of magnetic lines is also reversed. The core remains a magnet even after the current is switched off.
