What Is A Magnetic Core Memory?
The magnetic core memory used to be the main storage device before the discovery of silicon memory devices. It consists of a large number of toroidal shape rings made of ferromagnetic material whit a hole of diameter that may be less than 0.03mm. each core is about the size of the head of a pin. Other than its compact size low power consumption and low heat dissipation the magnetic core has another important characteristic. It can be magnetized at incredible speeds that are billionth of a second and will retain this magnetism unless deliberate change is made. It is based on the principle that a current charring conductor produces a circular magnetic field it becomes a magnet. If the direction of the current is reversed then the direction of magnetic lines is also reversed. The core remains a magnet even after the current is switched off.
