What is a longitudinal investigation?
A longitudinal investigation is a research study in which data are collected from the same participants over a period of time. The LIFE Study will collect information from couples while attempting to become pregnant and from women during their pregnancies. What is the main study question? The LIFE study will study whether environmental factors affect the length of time it takes couples to conceive and pregnant women’s ability to carry a pregnancy to term. What do couples have to do to participate in the study? • A telephone interview to determine eligibility. • An interview regarding environment, lifestyle, and medical history. • Completion of daily journals while attempting pregnancy. • Women will complete a monthly journal during pregnancy. • One blood sample at the initial interview for measuring chemicals in the body. • Up to three urine samples while trying to become pregnant or during pregnancy. • Men will be asked to provide two semen samples to determine their fertility status.
