What is a Long Term Care home?
Long-term care homes (LTC) are designed for individuals who require 24-hour nursing care and supervision. In general, LTC homes offer higher levels of personal care and support than those typically offered by retirement homes or supportive housing. The LTC home is usually required when either there is no longer sufficient support for a person to live at home, or the hospital discharges a patient who may not be able to cope at home any longer. Generally, residents of LTC homes are seniors that require a heavy degree of physical care, or they are dealing with Alzheimer disease or other forms of dementia that require constant care. The objectives of long-term care include promoting independence as much as possible, and ensuring that the best possible quality of life is provided to each resident.
