What is a “long coated” German Shepherd?
A long coated Shepherd is a common coat variety within the German Shepherd breed. Approximately 25% of all German Shepherds are considered to be long coated. The coat is characterized by a softer, more silky texture, and longer “fringe” on the ears, and the backs of the legs. Long coated Shepherd puppies are more appealing than their normal coated littermates, due to their fuzzy, plush appearance. Many long coated Shepherds resemble early German “Farm Dogs” that were commonly seen in the last century. Long coated Shepherds often are larger boned, and have sweeter, cuddlier temperaments.
