What is a listserv?
An Internet List, or listserv, is as an interest group in which any member may send a message to all others. List groups exist for a very, very large number of topics of all types, including social science and public administration topics. Messages cover discussion letters, professional papers, resource listings, conference and job announcements, and technical queries and advice. Joining a list is one way to keep up with happenings in a field of interest to you. Listserv is by far the most popular internet list software. A “listserv” refers both to this software and to the computer center which runs the software, which is essentially an automated e-mail program. A listserv, or email list, is a means by which a person can send an email message out to a large group of people. One can compose a message and send it to a single listserv address and all those subscribed will receive it and be able to respond. When replying to a listserv email, be careful about whether you are replying to the entire listserv or just to the sender of the email. Only reply to the entire listserv if you think the content of your reply might be useful to a significant number of listserv subscribers.
A LISTSERV allows anyone with an email address and a basic understanding of email principles to manage an electronic discussion forum for either USC use (to support a local student organization, an administrative committee or to distribute departmental faculty announcements, class discussion and instruction, etc.) or for the Internet community as a whole (for example, maybe you want to create a discussion list on 18th century French poets or a mailing list for an international conference your department is hosting). If you are interested in starting a LISTSERV list, refer to Academic Services LISTSERV List Request/Support website. Also, the LISTSERV handout provides information for LISTSERV mailing list participants, and includes a list of USC IT and public information-related lists. USC’s LISTSERV server also includes a web interface for listowners and subscribers and is available at http://listserv.sc.edu.
