What is a Level II trauma center?
The American College of Surgeons verifies trauma centers based on the presence of certain resources in levels of I to IV. In Wyoming, the state’s trauma care system is the only legislatively-mandated system in the country where all hospitals must go through trauma care certification and participate in the trauma care system. According to the Wyoming Healthcare Commission Web site, a Level I trauma center serves as a regional center and has the capability of providing total trauma care from prevention through rehabilitation. Level I centers have in-house resources available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They usually are university-based teaching hospitals because of the amount of personnel, equipment and resources involved.
