What is a Leave of Absence?
A leave of absence is an approved absence from your job responsibilities for a specified period of time. A leave of absence can be with or without pay. However, most leaves of absence are without pay. In some cases, certain circumstances may warrant a paid leave. For purposes of the NCFlex Program, these frequently asked questions focuses only on unpaid leave.
An LOA (Leave of Absence) places a student’s enrollment on hold for up to 3-months. The parent needs to contact the school at (800) 377-5890 and ask Customer Service to assist in facilitating a Leave of Absence. An LOA should only be used for serious medical or personal emergencies. During this time, no lessons are to be sent to teachers. For families on our payment plan, no monthly payments will be charged. Laurel Springs automatically reinstates and billing resumes unless otherwise notified by the parent after the 3-month LOA is up. The time a student is on an LOA will be added to the end of her enrollment. A second LOA is available for extreme situations. If a third LOA is requested, alternative plans need to be discussed. If a student would like to reinstate earlier than 3-months please call Customer Service to reinstate the student’s enrollment status.

On occasion, it is necessary for a student to take some time off from the direct pursuit of their KU degree. When this happens, it is important that the student take a “leave of absence” rather than simply “dropping out.” There are at least two compelling reasons for this. First, a person who is on leave does not have to reapply for admission into the program in order to resume his or her degree pursuit. Second, the “clock stops” insofar as univirsity and graduate school rules regarding the maximum number of years a student may take to complete his or her degree program are concerned. For example, the graduate school stipulates that a student entering a Ph.D. program at KU has a maximum of 8 years from beginning to end in order to complete a Ph.D. degree. (Students completing a masters degree at KU and then proceding toward the Ph.D. have a total of 10 years to complete all degree requirements.) A student who takes a 1-year leave of absence during his or her time at KU will have an add
