What is a Leave of Absence?
Students who wish to discontinue their studies for one or more semesters (other than summer semester) must file for a Leave of Absence. Click Here to request a Leave of Absence online (required). Please contact the Retention and First Year Experience office 435.797.1132(TSC 314) if more information is required.
Students are permitted to take a leave of absence for personal and educational reasons. Leaves may be granted for up to one academic year. Students may request one additional year of leave. Students must apply for a leave prior to the term for which they do not intend. Students should discuss whether taking a leave from their studies at Stanford is an appropriate course of action with their academic advisor or with an advisor in Undergraduate Advising Center. International students should also consult with staff in the Bechtel International Center about whether their immigration status will permit them to take a leave without jeopardizing their student status.
A student who must interrupt active pursuit of the MBA degree for a semester or more may petition the program director for a leave of absence of up to one year. A student who discontinues active enrollment in the academic program without being granted a leave of absence must apply for readmission and will be subject to the new regulations and requirements in force. Students granted a leave of absence must complete the degree within five years, including the leave of absence.
