Jerkins refer to both an under garment (usually of leather) for armor. Generally, however, jerkins are used as padding for heavy ring, or plate armor, so it does not irritate the skin. Also in the case of both these forms of armor, a jerkin works as padding against body blows (i.e. staves, clubs the like).
