What Is a Laserdisc Player?
Overview The laserdisc (LD) home video format competed with rival formats such as VHS before the advent of DVD. Although laserdisc players never sold as well as VCRs in the United States, the format offered advantages that its contemporary competition could not replicate. Invention David Paul Gregg invented the disc technology in 1958. The Philips electronics company obtained the rights to the system in 1969 and worked with MCA to develop the laserdisc for home video players.
